What did the Town of Wells buy at Moody Beach?

The Town of Wells has purchased, originally bequeathed by George Tibbetts (the original developer at Moody Beach), and now from Eleanor Wright, all “right, title and interest” to land in the Town of Wells, described as follows:

“All of Moody Beach from the Ogunquit-Wells town line on its southerly border to the intersection of Ocean Avenue with the seawall on its northerly border, from the eastern face of the seawall [and along the same course of the seawall where there are gaps in the seawall] along the full length of the beach at its western border, down to the low water mark of the Atlantic Ocean or 100 rods, whichever is greater, as its eastern border.”

The legal ramifications of this acquisition are not yet clear, but the town’s determination to make this happen was impressive. Last month the Select Board formally announced support for expanded public use of the town’s beaches. All Mainers appreciate this important step in the larger legal and legislative effort to return use of the intertidal zone to the people of Maine.

The way it always was, before 1989.
