“Our” lawsuit
We are not plaintiffs in the case —- we didn’t file the lawsuit. But the Our Maine Beaches volunteers and this website support those who brought the original lawsuit, beginning a process that has now moved to Maine’s Supreme Court.
A recent Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court said there is “strong and compelling argument” for revisiting the flawed 1989 decisions. She argued that those decisions are “founded upon a faulty legal analysis.” Please download and read the compelling arguments the attorneys made.
Who’s paying for the lawsuit?
The underdogs, that’s who. The folks funding the lawsuit are not the powerful elite scooping up beachfront properties.
The plaintiffs have put up their own money to pay for the bulk of the legal work, but many small donors have also pitched in. As a group with a common purpose, collectively we are people who know that the intertidal zone and all Maine beaches belong to the people of Maine, held in trust by the State of Maine. As the case proceeds, donations from concerned citizens like you will continue to be crucial.
So far, enough money has been raised to get the lawsuit back in front of Maine’s Supreme Court, where it belongs. That’s an important victory! (Click here for info about the LEGAL TEAM.) In the months and years to come, we will need to raise tens of thousands more. Ordinary Mainers will help get this done.
